John McNeill ist Professor für Geschichte an der School of Foreign Service der Georgetown University in Washington D.C. Er hat bereits mehrere Sachbücher veröffentlicht, darunter The Mountains of the Mediterranean World. An Environmental History. Mit Something New Under the Sun (so der Originaltitel von Blue Planet) wurde er für den »BP Natural World Book Prize« nominiert und gewann den »World History Association Book Award«.
